I’ve been reading Tarot for more than thirty years and reading professionally at Seattle’s Edge of the Circle Books for more than 15 years. My belief is that Tarot is best used for putting you in touch with your own subconscious, allowing you to make healthy decisions that can change your life for the better. My readings tend to be commonsensical, geared toward helping the client deal with issues and obstacles to wholeness in a way that brings a sense of self-empowerment.

In this weekly column, I’ll take you questions and perform a Tarot Reading just for you. You can submit your question using the link below. You can even submit questions anonymously!

This week’s question comes from an anonymous reader, who would like to know more about their potential for future romance and success at creative endeavors.

Hi there, Anon! It seems like you’ve got very definite ideas about the direction you’d like to go this year!

I used a new spread this week because your query deals with more than one area of your life. This spread is called Planetary Spread. It’s called the Planetary Spread because each planet (or celestial body) has certain correspondences that pertain to different areas of your life, like work, love, obstacles, and actions you may take to reach your aspirations. This spread may be useful for helping you to figure out what direction you’re headed in, and gives advice for how to achieve your goals for the future.

Let’s see what the cards have to say.

For newcomers, once I’ve shuffled, cut and laid out the cards, I like to take a look at the card on the bottom of the deck. It gives me a feeling or a tone for the reading.

In this case, you’ve got the 5 of Swords. It’s pretty common these days for people to think of love in the way described by Pat Benatar’s famous song, Love is a Battlefield. We tend to expect the worst when it comes to romance and relationships. Yet, we all want that love to come to us, very badly, as long as we don’t have to take any risks!

When it comes to creative endeavors, the same dynamic applies. In our culture, most creative people are told that it’s basically impossible to make a living doing what they love. In fact, parents are now being told to discourage their kids from careers in the arts! So, it’s no surprise that creative folks often struggle with the conundrum of creativity=poverty versus soul-eating job=respectability and affluence.

We’ve become appallingly used to the idea that we can’t have what we want, without pain and suffering. In your case, in order to achieve your goals, you’ll have to quit expecting the worst!

On to the reading proper.

I drew nine cards for this spread.

Part One

Card 1: Sun

Recent life choices, and the thoughts or feelings you might be conscious of regarding those choices. The Sun traditionally governs creativity, healing, wealth, growth, clarity and freedom. So, this position might also have a bearing on those areas of your life, particularly if you are a creative person.

The card in this position is the 3 of Cups. Good times, parties, like-minded folks who bring joy to others.

Often, when this card comes up in a spread it refers to groups of people who come together to create something that brings joy and wellbeing to others. This can be anything from a writing group, a band, an acting troupe, a nightclub, a spa, or even a restaurant.

This card may urge you to find others like yourself to hang with, other creative people who are doing the things you’re interested in. It’s also a reminder that you won’t meet that great love by staying in the house. Get out there and meet people, if you’re not doing it already!

Card 2: Moon

The Subconscious, Dreams, Psychic and/or Intuitive work; hidden feelings about the issue, what’s going on with you emotionally.

The card in this position is The Devil, reversed. Freedom from a negative situation. Money isn’t the only way to happiness. Getting out of your own way by thinking positively. Mental obstacles to your happiness have been removed.

You may have endured and won a tough inner fight to free yourself from a negative or painful situation, or even just a sense of being stuck or stifled. You may have let go of self-defeating mindsets and behaviors that effectively prevent you from achieving your highest potential.

Card 3: Mercury

Communications of all sorts, including visual communications. What you’re reading, hearing, viewing, etc,.

The card in this position is the 9 of Cups, reversed. I’d be willing to bet that somehow, you feel that you’ve settled for not ever quite getting what you really want, instead trying to be grateful for what you think you can have. Or that could be the message you keep receiving from those around you or the media. The message here is clear: if you settle for what you don’t want, you absolutely will never get it!

Card 4: Venus

Love, beauty, social skills, the arts.

The card in this position is Judgment. Hearing the Call from Within. Resurrection of an old dream or Life Purpose. The time is now. A wake-up call to listen to your Higher Self and act, or forever hold your peace.

Judgment may be urging you to realize that now is the time to act to achieve your dreams and ambitions. There may never be better time than right now. If there’s an old dream that never came to fruition, this is the time to bring it into being. No more waiting! And as for romance, don’t put off going out to meet new people, or if you’re already interested in someone. Act on your feelings. Communicate!

Card 5: Mars

What actions you are taking, what energy you put out into the world, or the lack thereof.

The card in this position is the 9 of Swords, reversed. Learning to ignore the Inner Critic. Acknowledging inner pain and moving past it. Refusing to feel guilty for things that aren’t your fault or responsibility.

You may be using an awful lot of will power to stop listening to the nagging voice within that tells you that you’re not good enough, attractive enough, talented enough; programming that we all end up burdened with as a result of anything from upbringing to too much exposure to toxic media messages. The key is that you’re beginning to listen to the Higher Self that works for your highest good, rather than the negative voice of fear and resistance. You may also find yourself less willing to take on others people’s responsibilities out of a misplaced sense of guilt, instead setting healthy boundaries that allow you the time and space you need for creativity.

Card 6: Jupiter

Where you’re expanding in your life– your hopes and dreams, wealth, business.

The card in this position is the 3 of Wands, reversed. Efforts to expand into new ventures is blocked. Dependence on others backfires. Waiting for permission. Limited view.

The 3 of Wands in its reversed aspect may warn you to go after what you want without waiting for other folks you might have been counting on to “step up”. Unless you take the lead, unless you go after new opportunities, you’ll remain stuck waiting for other people to get with the program. Be a leader. You may also need to look at things more broadly, expand the way you’re looking at things. And in romantic endeavors, stop fishing in such a small pond!

Card 7: Saturn

Many times, I describe this position as the “Clue-by-four” that will whack you upside the head until you get this lesson. It deals with limitations, responsibilities, and sometimes endings.

The card in this position is the 2 of Pentacles. Balance and flexibility. More than one source of income. Balance of work and play, Creativity and love life, Creative endeavors and mundane work life. Balancing finances. Multitasking.

One of the most important lessons you must learn is to make room in your life for all the things you want to do: you can have it all if you prioritize wisely. You can juggle many activities effectively, if you pay close attention to all the balls you have spinning around.

Card 8: The next step to take; 10 of Swords

The end of troubles. Time to release the things in our lives that we cannot “fix”. Quit beating a dead horse!

There may be some attitudes or past situations that you keep holding onto that prevent you from moving forward in romance or in creative projects. Time to let them go, and begin anew.

Card 9: Attitude Adjustment; King of Pentacles

Anon, this is a wonderful time for you to begin seriously investing in yourself. Your time, money, and energy whether physical or emotional, is precious. Spend it on what actually matters!

Wrapping It Up

There’s a clear message here to seize this moment to create the life you want to live, in all areas of your life. Pay attention to balancing all the different things you want to do, because you have a lot of ideas– but do them. And remember, you don’t have to give up your creativity for a relationship, or vice versa. Go for both, instead. The time is now.
