I’ve been reading Tarot for more than thirty years and reading professionally at Seattle’s Edge of the Circle Books for more than 15 years. My belief is that Tarot is best used for putting you in touch with your own subconscious, allowing you to make healthy decisions that can change your life for the better. My readings tend to be commonsensical, geared toward helping the client deal with issues and obstacles to wholeness in a way that brings a sense of self-empowerment.

In this weekly column, I’ll take you questions and perform a Tarot Reading just for you. You can submit your question using the link below. You can even submit questions anonymously!

This week’s question comes from an anonymous reader, who asks: How do I proceed? Not sure if I should say more…I have just had a huge life changing event occur, and I need to do the next thing…How? What?

Hi, Anon! Okay. Take a deep breath, and let’s take a look at your situation. It seems that you’re feeling a bit shaken up by life– and are struggling to figure out which way to go.

An original Spread I created, called How To Get What You Want With Less Drama, may be just the one to provide some approaches you might consider. The purpose of this spread is to show you your past, present and future expression in the world. Then, in part two of the Reading, there are five additional cards picked for advice on how to make choices and changes in your life to get the results that you want to see.

This way, you have a spiritual “map” of sorts to use as a creative thinking springboard– to help you see these issues from your subconscious.

Here we go.

After shuffling the deck and cutting it, I lay out all of the cards in the spread, then turn the deck over to note the card on the bottom of the stack. This card, for me, represents the “Feel” or the “Tone” of the Reading.

Tone: 5 of Pentancles

Often, when the 5 of Pentacles comes up in a spread, we are worried. Pentacles represent the Earth element; therefore money, house and home, work, all material things, and sometimes even the physical body. The 5 of Pentacles can herald a wish to walk away from a job. Perhaps we may have just lost a source of income, or, our source of income could be a feast-or-famine kind of thing, like temping or working various contracts or freelancing. We may be worried that we lack the means for something important to us, a new apartment, for example. The bright side of this card is that financial or material hardships are often temporary. So, at the very least, there’s a serious need for thrift. But, this too shall pass.

Situation: Ace of Pentacles, Reversed

Ace of Pentacles can refer to new work, new jobs, or a new house or apartment. When this card is reversed, however, we may find delays keeping us from attaining that newfound prosperity. Or even worse, we may get the new job, and we hate it. Or that great new apartment is right down the street from Crack Central! It could be referring to a situation where we are experiencing Wealth without Joy, or Joy without Wealth. And sometimes, new beginnings just don’t quite take off.

Card 1: Past (What Has Gone Before), 8 of Cups

The 8 of Cups may be saying that, recently, you were feeling the need to leave a situation that was very draining. This may have pushed you to seek something that had more meaning to you, something you’ve been yearning to do for quite a while. You may be seeking something more in line with your Spiritual beliefs, versus only focusing on the material. It’s as if you’ve thrown up your hands and said, “I surrender!” But, what you’re surrendering to is your higher purpose.

Card 2: Present (Where You Are Now), 5 of Swords, Reversed

It may be hard to see a way to win in your current situation, and you may feel as if you’ve been betrayed, in a sneaky, underhanded way. The presence of this card may prompt you to try to take some sort of preemptive action to avoid getting screwed. So, one may quit a job to avoid being fired, one may choose not to date rather than be hurt. You could feel as if you’re embroiled in a hostile situation or environment. Often, the warning message of this card is: Pick your battles.

Card 3: Future (What You Can Expect If Nothing Changes), 10 of Swords

The 10 represents endings, as in the end of a matter. The 10 of Swords has a bad reputation because it’s a little frightening to look at. One sees this card and thinks: Yikes, that guy in the card has not only been stabbed in the back, he’s been stabbed in the back ten friggin times! Relax. This card is not as dire as some would have you think. Here’s the secret of the 10 of swords: there is no 11 of Swords, which means it’s not going to get any worse! It can also mean that we finally quit beating a dead horse, as my Grandmother used to say. We wash our hands of a situation that we know cannot be salvaged. And, once we’ve done that, we can begin a new journey. Time to move on.

The Second Part of the Reading: ADVICE; Or, How To Get What You Want With Less Drama

Card 1: The Lovers

It’s time to make a major choice that is in your long-term best interest. Make sure you’re considering your own needs first, for once! Focus on what brings you wholeness.

Card 2: The Emperor

This is not a time for flights of fancy. Opt for a structured, logical, step-by-step approach that you can build on. Here’s another tip: if you’d thought about taking a job that’s a bit more solid, even corporate, that might be just the ticket for now.

Card 3: 9 of Pentacles, Reversed

First of all, with the 9 of Pentacles Reversed, there’s a need to manage one’s time better and to manage one’s money and financial obligations with more attention to whatever could possibly go wrong. Don’t go for a fast fix to money problems. Many times, this card, when reversed might be saying it’s time to get a roommate. Watch the spending.

Card 4: Justice, Reversed

If you’ve got bills, legal matters, papers or documents that are time-sensitive, the time to act is now to make sure things go in your favor. Otherwise, there could be delays that could throw a monkey wrench in your plans. If there’s a situation where someone’s bias is becoming an impediment to your forward momentum, get prepared to meet that head on. And maybe try being fair to yourself!

Card 5: 4 of Cups

In your case, it may be a struggle not to succumb to depression, or what we used to call The Blues. Take another look at options you’ve previously turned down because of a sense of  having “been there, done that, got the T-shirt”. Those very options that you thought held nothing of value may be exactly what you need to get you what you want.

Wrapping It Up:

Here’s my advice for you, Anon. I suspect your situation, though pushing you out of your comfort zone, may be exactly what you need to get you what you actually want. You may already be moving toward certain goals, and it seems you’d planned to leave the situation you’re currently in the process of exiting. It may be time to go for it, rather than holding on to a current path you no longer really want. Choose what really makes you happiest and healthiest as a long-term choice.

Forge ahead!
