I’ve been reading Tarot for more than thirty years and reading professionally at Seattle’s Edge of the Circle Books for more than 15 years. My belief is that Tarot is best used for putting you in touch with your own subconscious, allowing you to make healthy decisions that can change your life for the better. My readings tend to be commonsensical, geared toward helping the client deal with issues and obstacles to wholeness in a way that brings a sense of self-empowerment.
In this weekly column, I’ll take you questions and perform a Tarot Reading just for you. You can submit your question using the link below. You can even submit questions anonymously!
This week’s question comes from an anonymous reader, who asks:
Will I be able to leave my husband and have a happy life?
Hi, Anon! what a difficult situation you’re dealing with! It sounds as if you’ve taken a long time to make this decision, and have been carefully considering the best ways to go about making this profound life change.
An original spread I created, called How To Get What You Want With Less Drama, may be just the one to provide some approaches you might consider. At the very least, this spread may help you see new ways of looking at the issues that are most important to you at this delicate time in your life.
The purpose of this spread is to show you your past, present and future expression in the world.
Then, in part two of the Reading, there are five additional cards picked for advice on how to make choices and changes in your life to get the results that you want to see. In other words, how can you get what you want out of this situation with the least amount of stress possible?
The idea is to create a spiritual map of sorts to use as a creative thinking springboard, and to help you see these issues from the viewpoint of your Higher Self.
Here we go.
After shuffling the deck and cutting it, I lay out all of the cards in the spread, then turn the deck over to note the card on the bottom of the stack. This card for me represents the feel or the tone of the reading. In this case, the card I picked is The Emperor. What this card says to me is that you are very focused on taking control of your own life. Your wish now is to be the Ruler of your own Kingdom. You are going about the mental process of building a new life in a logical, step-by-step manner. You may have been waiting for change for a long time, but now, you’re tired of waiting. Instead, you’re laying strong foundations for a new, fulfilling life.
Situation: 5 of Pentacles, reversed
Sometimes when the 5 of Pentacles comes up in a spread, it signals a return to work after being unemployed, or just not working enough. Finally, after a long period of struggle, you might find yourself with the resources needed to create that new beginning. Money might not be such an obstacle for you right now. So, good timing!
Card 1: Past; Ace of Swords
A Major Effort, a new beginning! Your brain is probably going a million miles a minute these days, trying to brainstorm solutions to every possible problem you can anticipate. This is a new way of thinking for you, and it requires a major effort on your part to stay focused on what’s really important in your situation. You’re using your mind to analyze the best possible ways to sever yourself from a marriage you no longer wish to be a part of.
Card 2: Present; The Wheel of Fortune
A time of dynamic changes. Right now, all around you , dynamic changes are happening, and that may influence you to initiate some of those huge changes in your own life that you’ve been longing to make.
Card 3: Future; Page of Swords
Deadlines, Seeking Justice through communication, Clear, detached communication. You may have set an internal deadline for yourself, ex., “I want to be on my own by Spring,” or “I must have filed for divorce by…” The key here is to be careful to give yourself enough time. And don’t beat yourself up if you find that you have to make adjustments. Instead, communicate your needs clearly, in a detached manner, and you’ll be more likely to get the results you want.
Part Two: How To Get What You Want With Less Drama
Card 1: 4 of Cups
Okay, if you find yourself down in the dumps because of your current situation, this is the time to do something about the things you can affect right now. If you need more space, create it by finding sanctuary either in your home or out of it. If you’re just bored out of your skull, make your life more interesting and fun, by breaking up stale routines. And don’t fall into the trap of not noticing the good things in your life because you’re so focused on the depressing things going on in your life. There’s a lot of good there, too. In your case, the cloud hanging over your head actually does have a silver lining!
Card 2: Ace of Wands, reversed
False starts. Bad timing.
The Ace of Wands reversed may be warning you to beware of not following through. Carefully get all your ducks in a row before you commit to action, and then follow through to the end! Plan, plan, and plan some more.
Card 3: The Magician, reversed
Misuse of talents or personal power. Needing to read between the lines.
The Magician reversed may be cautioning you to keep your eyes wide open when it comes to trusting people. Make sure any agreements you sign off on are in your best interest. Don’t be tempted to do anything underhanded, yourself, either. What’s needed here is clear communication. It might also be time for you to consider using your talents and skills in the way you feel that they are meant to be used.
Card 4: 9 of Pentacles, reversed
Need to handle financial matters more appropriately. Time management and organization. Difficulty living or being alone. Re-learning personal, emotional, and financial independence. This is a heads up from the Tarot that one of the most crucial areas of your life to work on right now may be getting your finances in order. It may also be suggesting that instead of living alone, consider a roommate. It may take time for you to be comfortable living alone again, and these days, cost prohibitive!
Card 5: 4 of Pentacles
Save, save, and well, save! What I mean is that you should conserve as much money as possible, but it can also mean a need to conserve your physical and emotional energy as well. You’ll need it for the coming days.
Wrapping It Up
Here’s my advice for you, Anon: It sounds as if you’ve been thinking about leaving your husband for quite some time. The Tarot indicates that this is something you can accomplish, and the issue of having a happy life is something that you have control over. Think carefully about how you want to be living in the future, like, five years from now. Think about how you can make that dream reality, on your own. Then start taking steps to make it happen!
