I’ve been reading Tarot for more than thirty years and reading professionally at Seattle’s Edge of the Circle Books for more than 15 years. My belief is that Tarot is best used for putting you in touch with your own subconscious, allowing you to make healthy decisions that can change your life for the better. My readings tend to be commonsensical, geared toward helping the client deal with issues and obstacles to wholeness in a way that brings a sense of self-empowerment.
In this weekly column, I’ll take you questions and perform a Tarot Reading just for you. You can submit your question using the form below. You can even submit questions anonymously!
This week’s question comes from Anonymous, who asks: I suppose my question is in two parts. What is (or WILL be) going on in general? What can I do to make the universe work in my favor? Thank you very much, blessed be!
Hi, Anon! This is a wonderful time to cast one’s gaze to the future, to see what patterns are evolving and which ones are finally passing out of influence in our lives.
To answer your questions, I’m using an original Spread I created called How to Get What You Want with Less Drama. It may be just the one to provide some approaches you might consider.
The purpose of this spread is to show you your past, present, and future expression in the world. Then, in part two of the Reading, there are five additional cards picked for advice on how to make choices and changes in your life to get the results that you want to see.
This way, you have a spiritual “map” of sorts to use as a creative thinking springboard, and to help you see these issues from your subconscious.
Here we go.
After shuffling the deck and cutting it, I lay out all of the cards in the spread, then turn the deck over to note the card on the bottom of the stack. This card, for me, represents the “Feel” or the “Tone” of the Reading.
Tone: The Lovers
Anon, this is the year that puts you in the driver’s seat of your own love life and general life purpose. The choices you make this year will revolve around discerning what is best for you in the long run, what choices are healthiest, and what choices bring you the most joy. The key here is to choose consciously and carefully. The Lovers often comes up in a reading when one is at a crossroads in their life. I suspect that you’re being alerted to the fact that you realize you can’t stay in the same zone you’ve been locked in, possibly for years. It’s time to choose a direction. With the Lovers as the Tone of this reading, you may be challenged to start forming healthy and loving connections to others, whether romantic or platonic. Though you may have been hurt before, this year will bring opportunities to open to others in a way that may have become difficult in the last few years. It’s a new cycle, and this one may even bring romance into your life. Are you ready to accept and nurture it?
Situation: 9 of Wands
Don’t let your past make you paranoid! You may be feeling like one of the walking wounded. Though heart-weary and still carrying the burdens and heartache of the past, you keep plodding along with the vague idea that if you do so, someday, one day—things will get better. You may constantly assume the worst of others’ motives, particularly when judging those who show romantic interest in you. You may have built some pretty heavy defenses to prevent being ensnared by someone and thus hurt emotionally. On the other hand, you may be showing a fierce tenacity regarding someone when it’s possible that you shouldn’t. The Supremes song, You Just Keep Me Hanging’ On, comes to mind. Know when to let go.
Card 2: Past (What Has Gone Before), 5 of Pentacles
Worry, lacking the means, feeling left out; these are all phrases that describe the energy of the 5 of Pentacles. In the recent past, you may have been consumed with money worries, or been living a feast or famine existence. In matters of the heart, this card may refer to a time of feeling that your life is lacking something vital; or that a love relationship itself seems empty and unfulfilling. Or, you could just find that there are slim pickings out there when looking for a prospective partner.
Card 3: Present (Where You Are Now), 8 of Cups, Reversed
You may be painfully aware that there are old patterns, attitudes and unhealthy attachments that are draining all your energy and positivity. The 8 of Cups symbolizes letting go of those attachments and moving toward a more fruitful and affirming existence. When this card is reversed, it may be difficult to move into new, positive beginnings because it’s so hard to let go, even when we know we should. This can make us feel exhausted and frustrated. This is a great time to focus on your personal truth, and what is really important to you.
Card 4: Future (What To Expect If Nothing Changes), Queen of Cups, Reversed
It may be that you have a tendency to give too much, to love too much and then become dangerously depleted when other take and take, and give nothing back in return. This can leave you putting up Shields like the Starship Enterprise, in an effort to protect yourself from being emotionally drained or even overwhelmed. However, this does nothing for your love life! There’s a need to learn to Say No. Set healthy boundaries!
The Second Part of the Reading: ADVICE; Or, How To Get What You Want With Less Drama
Card 1: Knight of Cups, Reversed
While the Knight of Cups is a fun, romantic sweep you off your feet kind of person, the Reversed version is bad news. These folks, regardless of how old they are, tend to behave like ungrounded, flighty teenagers with a drug problem. They can’t ever finish anything, and they are never, ever, ever going to commit. Stay away from this type! On the other hand, you might need to learn how to have fun again. And maybe you should focus on that, rather than looking for a partner to settle down with. Clear your romantic palate!
Card 2: Page of Pentacles, Reversed
More patience, Grasshopper! There’s not really a quick fix, here—instead, the page of Pentacles reversed might be warning you to pay attention to those you bring into your life at this time. Be thrifty with the energy you put out into the world, and into people. Make sure you’re getting a return on your emotional investment. Otherwise, this card may be advising you to be frugal in all money matters. If you’re lacking the qualifications for a particular job, it might be time to knuckle down, study and expand that skill set.
Card 3: Queen of Wands
Build that new future on a firm foundation, and be utterly methodical when constructing a plan to make it happen. It might be time for you to take the lead, rather than being a follower, particularly when it comes to relationships!
Card 4: 10 of Wands
In terms of romance, this card may be telling you to avoid becoming entangled with those who make you do all the work in a relationship. Your relationships should be like fighting an uphill battle. You should not be the only one putting in the effort. Those are the sorts of relationships to avoid at all costs. In other areas of your life, you may make an effort to not get overextended, otherwise, you won’t have time for more pleasurable pursuits!
Card 5: Judgment
It’s time to resurrect something in your life that you’ve let die. It could be an old dream, or a creative pursuit, or a career direction. The thing to remember here is this: it’s now or never! This is your year for a fresh start in many areas of your life. It’s time to open up to new possibilities that you may have overlooked, or just not even considered. There may be hard choices that you need to make, but once you do, your life will change in a very big way, for the better.
Wrapping It Up:
Here’s my advice for you, Anon. This is an important year for you, particularly in the area of relationships. This is the year to, once and for all—let go of attachments that no longer serve any purpose but causing pain and stagnation. Instead, you have terrific opportunities for fulfilling relationships and growth in career and money matters. Embrace them.
