I’ve been reading Tarot for more than thirty years and reading professionally at Seattle’s Edge of the Circle Books for more than 15 years. My belief is that Tarot is best used for putting you in touch with your own subconscious, allowing you to make healthy decisions that can change your life for the better. My readings tend to be commonsensical, geared toward helping the client deal with issues and obstacles to wholeness in a way that brings a sense of self-empowerment.
In this weekly column, I’ll take you questions and perform a Tarot Reading just for you. You can submit your question using the form below. You can even submit questions anonymously!
This week’s question comes from Angel, who asks: Does my life path improve? Especially in my relationship?
Hi there, Angel!
Yep, this is the time of year that we all begin the process of evaluating where we’ve been going in our lives and, even more importantly, where we’re heading in the new year.
Many times we can get so caught up in what has gone wrong in our lives that new paths and choices available to us can be difficult to suss out.
That’s why with this question, we’re going to use an original spread I created named: How To Get What You Want With Less Drama.
The purpose of this spread is to show you your past, present and future expression in the world. Then, in part two of the Reading, there are five additional cards picked for advice on how to make choices and changes in your life to get the results in your life that you want to see.
This way, you have a spiritual “map” of sorts to use a creative thinking springboard– to help you see these issues from a different angle; from your subconscious.
Here we go.
After shuffling the deck and cutting it, I lay out all of the cards in the spread, then turn the deck over to note the card on the bottom of the stack. This card, for me, represents the “Feel” or the “Tone” of the Reading.
Tone: Queen of Cups
The Queen of Cups usually represents people who would be very good as teachers, counselors, healers, social workers or psychiatrists. These are people who tend to use their ability to empathize with others in the work, and in their relationships. Queen of Cups people also tends to be profoundly spiritual, and not necessarily in a conventional way. Because they are so empathetic, it’s often hard for them to set hard boundaries with the people they love; they may give too much, and then feel burned out. Someone receiving this card may need to listen to the wisdom deep within.
Card 1: The Queen of Pentacles
In contrast to the Queen of Cups, the Queen of Pentacles is earthy, practical, and may mean that at this time you’re focused on issues around your home or even thinking of working from home. You may be learning your own worth– to value yourself in relationships. You are beginning to remember that you’re quite the catch! The Queen of Pentacles often urges you to take better care of yourself: getting in shape, updating our look, in general just learning to really love yourself.
Card 2: Past (What Has Gone Before), The Hierophant
One of the issues that the Hierophant can bring up is the need to put clarifying parameters around a relationship. In other words, the dreaded “L” word. Labels. With the presence of this card, there may be a tendency to obsess with “Keeping up with the Jones’”. We worry that we’re not keeping up with our age group in terms of what kind of money we’re earning, whether it’s time to get married or not, whether we’ve got the “right” housing situation. We may also be dealing with more orthodox or conventional religions when the Hierophant shows up in the reading.
Card 3: Present (Where You Are Now), 8 of Pentacles, Reversed
The 8 of Pentacles often comes up in a reading when we’re learning something, or expanding our skills in some way. From formal classes at the University to teaching yourself a language on your own– or even, simply learning how to treat your partner– it’s all about learning and applying a bit of elbow grease– hard work! However, when this card is reversed, you might be feeling that some things regarding your relationship or life path are simply not worth the effort. Alternatively, you might decide to work on what’s really important. Not everything needs fixing.
Card 4: Future, 6 of Cups
With the 6 of Cups, you can look forward to someone from your past coming back into your life. Or perhaps, someone or something important gives you a sense of Déjà vu.
There may be gifts involved, and we are filled with a generosity of spirit that makes us just a little kinder. We may think of children, or take up activities that we loved in childhood, or still have a fondness for in our hearts. Many times, this card heralds the arrival of our Soul Mate.
The Second Part of the Reading: ADVICE; Or, How To Get What You Want With Less Drama
Card 1: King of Swords
First of all, be a bit more detached and logical about the new directions you’re planning. And if you’ve ever thought about writing– this is a path you should stick with.
Card 2: 8 of Wands
Networking might be needed. You might try using “fast” methods of communication to reach your goals, such as the internet, texting, the phone, and email.
Card 3: The Emperor
Build that new future on a firm foundation, and be utterly methodical when constructing a plan to make it happen. It might be time for you to take the lead, rather than being a follower, particularly when it comes to relationships!
Card 4: The Lovers, Reversed
This card challenges you to make a choice, you’re at a crossroads. But beware of seeing only good/bad, success/failure options, when what is really needed is making choices that are best for you in the long run. Sometimes, we need to see things in nuance, and see all possibilities; good, bad, sorta good, and this-idea-needs-a-little-tweaking!
Card 5: The Magician
Here’s another card in your spread that points out the need to use your talents in the way you feel they’re meant to be used. What are you really here for, Angel? I’d say communication is key, in terms of what you should be doing with your life path energy. So, if you’re a writer, or a visual artist, or a screenwriter (anything that allows you to use your gift for communication) revel in it. The Magician may also be advising you to walk your own path. You don’t fit into anyone’s mold; so don’t even try. Be your magical, individual self.
Wrapping It Up:
Here’s my advice for you, Angel. I’d say that while in the past you might have had a bit of a crisis of faith, you are well on your way to using your gifts and talents in a way that will bring you more fulfillment and love in the coming New Year. You are truly coming into your own.
