I’ve been reading Tarot for more than thirty years and reading professionally at Seattle’s Edge of the Circle Books for more than 15 years. My belief is that Tarot is best used for putting you in touch with your own subconscious, allowing you to make healthy decisions that can change your life for the better. My readings tend to be commonsensical, geared toward helping the client deal with issues and obstacles to wholeness in a way that brings a sense of self-empowerment.

In this weekly column, I’ll take you questions and perform a Tarot Reading just for you. You can submit your question using the link below. You can even submit questions anonymously!

This week’s question comes from an Julia, who says: I am wondering what kind of path lies before me in regards to my health.

Hi Julia! I always like to remind folks who request readings on health issues that as a Professional Tarot Reader, I don’t feel it’s appropriate to do readings that are diagnostic in nature, as I am not a health professional. However, what I can do is give you a general outlook, plus tips from the Tarot on how to improve your situation with the least amount of stress and for the greatest benefits possible.

An original spread I created, How To Get What You Want With Less Drama, may be just the one to provide some approaches you might consider.

The purpose of this spread is to show you your past, present and future expression regarding the issue at hand. Then, in part two of the reading, there are five additional cards picked for advice on how to make choices and changes in your life to get the results that you want to see.

This way, you have a spiritual map of sorts to use as a creative thinking springboard– to help you see these issues from your subconscious.

Here we go.

Once I’ve shuffled, cut and laid out the cards, I like to take a look at the card on the bottom of the deck. It gives me a feeling or a tone for the reading.

Tone: The Knight of Swords, reversed

Julia, when the reversed Knight of Swords comes up in a reading, he may be trying to warn you to be careful not to jump to conclusions. On the other hand, sometimes we can be so over-cautious that we are moving “slow as molasses” when it comes to making a decision or taking action. This is the feeling around the entire reading.

Part One

Situation: The Queen of Pentacles

Taking good care of yourself, loving yourself more. Recognizing your own value. This card is definitely giving you a pat on the back, Julia! It seems that you’re embarking on a bit of a self-improvement program. You may be making changes in diet, exercising more, getting more sleep, reducing your stress level , and even improving your environment. Good work!

Card 1: Past; Queen of Swords, reversed

A woman who has known much sorrow. It may be that in the fairly recent past, you or another significant woman in your life has experienced quite a bit of pain due to physical difficulties. Since the Queen of Swords would represent the realms of mental activity, and organized, logical thinking, “brain fog”, or simply feeling a little scattered may be something that one has been dealing with.

Card 2: Present; The 9 of Pentacles, reversed

Better time management needed. Not able to enjoy the fruits of one’s labors. Delayed retirement. Focus on independence, worry about maintaining it. Worry about maintaining a certain standard of living. This card can also point to hormonal changes or even issues with blood sugar, suggesting that careful attention to diet is important. There’s a need to allow space in your life for enjoyment of all you have worked for. If you’re of a certain age, it’s probably time to get tested regularly for all those things you’re supposed to be keeping track of at this time of life.

Card 3: Future; The 5 of Pentacles

Worry, loss. In health related readings, there’s definitely a warning to watch out for joints; knees, ankles, hips, so be careful with yourself! Julia, this may look a bit dire, but remember that this reading is geared towards helping you to avoid issues like this in the future. One of the things this card may suggest is that it’s time to cut down on how many hours a week you work!

Let’s see how to get you a much happier outcome.

Part Two: How To Get What You Want With Less Drama

Card 1: 9 of Swords reversed

ell, there’s your problem! You’ve got to reduce your stress level, because that’s what makes all your symptoms worse! This is the card that more exemplifies stress-related illnesses! There’s also an admonition to quit feeling guilty for thinking that aren’t your fault, or for things you need to do to take the best possible care of yourself. No worries!

Card 2: The Hanged Man

Overwhelmed. Ruled excessively by intuition or alternatively, shutting down.

I’ve always seen this card as depicting Odin, the Norse Father of the gods who sacrificed himself to himself on the sacred tree of knowledge, Yggdrasil– the key is that he sacrificed himself to himself– for knowledge. Among other things, he learned many healing charms and remedies to all sorts of illnesses and battle wounds. So, the message I get from this card as it regards your question is that you may need to do some serious reading up on health issues you’re experiencing. The other point is that you may want to consider sacrifices that need to be made in the name of bettering your health and keeping it that way. And, as the Hanged Man can also describe a testing period, this may also be a good time to have medical exams done for hidden issues.

Card 3: 7 of Swords, reversed

Julia, this card may be asking you to reexamine some of your current plans to see if they are truly workable at this time or not. An approach that once worked well may not be effective at this time. It might be time to change strategies. It’s also very important to choose approaches that you can stick with. Only a wholehearted effort will work. Anything less guarantees failure. So give those plans to improve your health the old college try!

Card 4: The Devil, reversed

Lighten up! Think more positively. Cease self-defeating habits and/ or behaviors. Well, the first thing to remember with the Devil in its reversed aspect is that it’s time to live your life, not let your life live you! Your health is more valuable than money. In fact, your health is your wealth! If you’re a workaholic, or “addicted” to unhealthy habits , this is a great time to let go of them, and thrive. Thinking more positively about your health will help, more than you think!

Card 5: The 3 of Cups

More fun is needed. Need for like-minded people who aren’t toxic. Okay, Julia– here’s special dispensation from your Tarot Reader to get out there and have more fun. It’s time to hang with others who are also trying to improve their health, whether that’s a rowing group or softball team, or just a positive goddessy coffee klatch! Being around others who have the same goals will provide much needed support, and will help you stay focused on your health goals. The main thing is that the activities you choose are fun!

Wrapping It Up

Here’s my advice for you, Julia: Your health is absolutely priceless. This is a time to really focus on the quality of life you’d like to enjoy over the coming years. Sacrifices you make now, decisions you make that lower your stress level, and surrounding yourself with positive people–all those approaches may help you to have a happier, healthier 2016!

To your very good health!
