I’ve been reading Tarot for more than thirty years and reading professionally at Seattle’s Edge of the Circle Books for more than 15 years. My belief is that Tarot is best used for putting you in touch with your own subconscious, allowing you to make healthy decisions that can change your life for the better. My readings tend to be commonsensical, geared toward helping the client deal with issues and obstacles to wholeness in a way that brings a sense of self-empowerment.
In this weekly column, I’ll take you questions and perform a Tarot Reading just for you. You can submit your question using the link below. You can even submit questions anonymously!
This week’s question comes from an anonymous reader, who asks:
I have been in the process of concluding a long-term relationship for about 3 years. This process is almost complete. It has been a long road and has been multi-faceted.
As this new year has started, I have a deep internal desire to meet someone new and start a new chapter in life. I would like to know what the tarot reveals a healthy path to make this transition. What can I do to maintain a healthy balance in relationships and yet keep my own ideas/identity intact?
I did a slightly different spread this week because your question is a bit more complex. This spread is called The Star. It’s quite useful for figuring out what really matters in any given situation, and thus is wonderful for gaining clarity. It’s also a terrific spread for advice, and for sparking new ways to think about questions that we’ve been cogitating on for a good long time.
For starters, once I’ve shuffled, cut and laid out the cards, I like to take a look at the card on the bottom of the deck. It gives me a feeling, or a tone for the reading.
In this case, you’ve got the Queen of Swords, Reversed. This card tells me that you have has a very rough time of it when it comes to affairs of the heart, Anon. One of the key phrases used to describe the Queen of Swords in her reversed aspect is “The Woman Scorned.” Many people see this as saying that she’s somehow negative in some way. Actually, she’s “The Woman Scorned” because, well, she’s been treated badly by someone. So yeah, scorned. She has a reason for her anger and her pain.
When you receive this card, it might be time to be gentle with yourself and remember that it takes time to heal enough to lower your guard enough to trust again. The challenge that comes with this card is to not let the emotional pain that you’ve suffered at the hands of another make you bitter. Or, as my mom would have said, “You’re too young to be this old!”
Let’s see what the Cards have to say.
On to the reading proper.
I pulled six cards for this layout.
Card 1: Present (Where You Are Now); The Sun
Cheer up, Anon! You have a bright future ahead of you that brings freedom and fun, clarity and successful ventures. At the moment, you may finally be realizing what power there is in freedom. You might be remembering how much fun you can have on your own. You may be focused on the attainment of a certain goal, material success and happiness, good friendships, and new connections with others. There are many opportunities for you to meet new people, to succeed in your aspirations, and to bring long-standing problems to a positive outcome. This is a time for seeking wholeness, focusing on good health, and reveling in your liberation from a dark period in your life.
Card 2: Advice for the Situation; Judgment, Reversed
One thing to realize, Anon, is that you do not have an expiration date! It’s not too late for you to find the right person who will become the wonderful life-partner of your dreams. You have not missed your chance, so don’t focus on that. Judgment Reversed may be telling you that it’s time to listen to your instincts when they are telling you what directions to cast your gaze in. Don’t second guess yourself, and don’t succumb to fear of the future. This is also a good time to separate yourself from those with toxic energy. You have better things to do with your time! Don’t jump into a new relationship thoughtlessly, take your time.
Card 3: The Challenge You Must Face; The Wheel of Fortune, Reversed
You may be going through a period that you see as either bad luck or even just stagnation. Nothing may be moving forward as fast as you want it to. On the other hand, you may feel that change has become a bad word in your life. Change may feel frightening or threatening, and so you may tend to balk at the idea of moving along with the flow. There’s a need for more optimism and trust that you are going in the right direction. Don’t accept whatever life throws your way. This is especially important in love and life-path readings. Choose the people you want to spend time with. Don’t be a passive spectator in your own life, be the director of your own movie.
Card 4: Positive Uses of Your Energy At This Time; The Moon, Reversed
This is a great time for utter clarity, Anon. Don’t project anything on prospective new partners; not the worst nor the best. Try to focus on exactly what you see in front of you, without shading things in a positive or negative way due to past associations and experiences. If you’re ending a relationship, this is even more important. Don’t paint your Ex as The Anti-Christ or yourself as a saint. Instead, recognize that sometimes, people simply grow away from each other, because they have nothing left to teach each other. Try to end things on a positive note. And give yourself permission to start trusting your instincts again, rather than giving in to your fears.
Card 5: More Positive Actions; The 8 of Wands, Reversed
Slow down! No need to be in such a hurry! Don’t get into situations where everything seems to happen way too fast. On the other hand, if you want to meet new people, you might start networking. However, with the 8 of Wands Reversed, you may want to stay off the internet. Try meeting more people in person, instead. Don’t be impatient. Good things (and people) come to those who wait. Slow and steady wins the race.
Card 6: The Crucial Insight; The Queen of Cups
You are a lovely, empathetic person with lots of love to give that comes from a deeply spiritual place. One of the most important things for you to keep in mind is that you have a tendency to give, and give, and give until you are depleted and have no energy left, leaving you exhausted and feeling used. Set boundaries early in new relationships. Learn to say, “No, I’m not comfortable with that,” or “I’d like to think about that before I commit to it.” Let others carry their own weight in relationships. Try to find people who do not drain you, or use you as their personal therapist. Find an equal. Your spirituality may also be very important to you, Anon, so be sure to look for someone who is open-minded and open-hearted.
Wrapping it Up
This is a most excellent time for you to enjoy your freedom, Anon. Take your time finding a new partner, and make sure that they fit into all the important niches of your life, your drive to reach financial and material aspirations, your spirituality, and your longing for pure, simple pleasures. Don’t hold on to the old with bitterness. Open yourself to a bright and sunny future instead. Have fun!
