I’ve been reading Tarot for more than thirty years and reading professionally at Seattle’s Edge of the Circle Books for more than 15 years. My belief is that Tarot is best used for putting you in touch with your own subconscious, allowing you to make healthy decisions that can change your life for the better. My readings tend to be commonsensical, geared toward helping the client deal with issues and obstacles to wholeness in a way that brings a sense of self-empowerment.
In this weekly column, I’ll take you questions and perform a Tarot Reading just for you. You can submit your question using the link below. You can even submit questions anonymously!
This week’s question comes from an anonymous reader, who asks:
I am a freshman in high school and I am looking into moving to Oregon for college. I am interested in the exchange programs there as I would like to study abroad in Japan or Korea. I could also skip Oregon and get a Student Visa to live in either country for a few years. I have good grades, and I am familiar with both languages and cultures. I am not sure which goal I should shoot for, or if relying on moving states/ countries for my education is a good idea in the first place. Can you give me any help on how to decide? Thank you!
Wow! You’ve really got it together! I’m rather blown away by how clear your vision of your own future is, and I think that it bodes well for new beginnings in any case. It’s wonderful that you have such concrete goals. Let’s see if we can provide a little guidance for you via the Tarot. One thing I do want to make clear—this reading is more focused on giving you new ways to consider your choices from a new angle, rather than actually telling you what to do. In other words, this reading should be viewed as: What things do I need to consider? What’s really important here?
Make sense? Good.
I did a spread called The Star this week because it’s quite useful for figuring out what really matters in any given situation, and thus is wonderful for gaining clarity. It’s also a terrific spread for advice, and for sparking new ways to think about questions that we’ve been thinking about for a good long time.
I also added a mini-Norse Rune reading for you a clarifier: What’s the one thing that is most important to remember when making your decision? More about that, at the end of the reading.
To begin, once I’ve shuffled, cut and laid out the cards, I like to take a look at the card on the bottom of the deck. It gives me a feeling or a tone for the reading. In this case, you’ve got Temperance, reversed. Right off the bat, I can see that you’re having difficulty finding the “right fit”. One of the issues you’re struggling with is finding an option that has all of the elements you’re looking for. It’s as if one path has most of the things you want to do or study, but it doesn’t allow for all the other stuff you’d like to do.
On to the reading proper.
I pulled six cards for this layout.
Card 1: Present (Where You Are Now); 2 of Swords, reversed
Talk about indecision!
On one hand, you may be telling yourself that you’re reserving judgment until you have some sort of “sign” or serendipitous event that makes the correct choice clear to you. On the other hand, you may feel utterly paralyzed when it comes to making a choice. Either way, it’s really important to figure out what matters most to you in the long run, and then make a decision. And then, stick to that decision.
Card 2: Advice for the Situation; 7 of Pentacles
Evaluating; what’s done, what needs to get done!
With the 7 of Pentacles in this spread, you’re probably reviewing your progress in your academic career, and trying to figure out what further actions need to be taken for you to achieve your goals. You’ve been planting the seeds for your future for a long, long time—and though you can see progress, your crop is not yet ready for harvest. The good news is that you have some time to carefully consider your choices. And, this is another place where the 7 of Pentacles might lend a bit of advice for the situation: whichever option you decide on, make sure that the choice itself creates opportunities for you to reach a significant milestone in your career.
Card 3: The Challenge You Must Face; The High Priestess
Okay, first off, your intuition is probably dead on. Maybe it’s time to follow your instincts! On another note- you may have an opportunity to teach, or work with others in a counseling capacity. The challenge here is to go for it, even if it doesn’t entirely seem like the right fit, or something you’re ready for. Above all, trust your instincts!
Card 4: Positive Uses of Your Energy At This Time; Queen of Swords
The Logistics Genius
Here’s where I Geek out! In ancient Rome, the Genius was thought of as one’s inner guardian spirit. The Queen of Swords is most excellent at doing things like planning out itineraries, mapping out the most effective ways to achieve anything and everything. She’s your inner project manager. This is a time to invoke your inner Genius, the Queen of Swords, and break out the spreadsheets! Sit down and plan the things you want to do in as much detail as you can, leaving nothing to chance. Once you’ve got it all on a screen in front of you, it’ll be much easier to make a final decision.
Card 5: More Positive Actions; 9 of Pentacles, Reversed
Time Management is your friend.
The 9 of Pentacles is one of my favorite cards, because it speaks of independence, good management of everything from one’s diet to a business, and sometimes the need to live alone. It’s a card that often heralds a time of contentment at attaining one’s goals, and being able to relax and enjoy the fruits of one’s labors. In this case the card is reversed, and so it may be telling you to consider the following: Consider shared living accommodations. Play with timelines until they work for you. You may need to plan a more independent way of achieving all that you wish to, sort of like creating your own individual plan of study and curriculum.
Card 6: The Crucial Insight; The Lovers
Making the choice.
In this case, the Lovers is telling you that the choice you make should be the one that makes you happiest in the long run, and gives you the most joy, and is healthiest for your state of mind—your spirit. Which option are you “in love” with? That’s probably the one you should choose.
Wrapping it Up
First of all, what a fabulous future you’re creating for yourself! Good for you, and keep it up. You really have all the tools you need to make the right decision, and all you need to do is trust your intuition, go in the direction you’re most emotionally connected with, and plan, plan, plan!
At the beginning of this reading, I spoke of pulling a Norse Rune as a clarifier for the spread. The Rune I pulled for you was Raido. Very simply, this rune tells me that the ability to travel is the most important thing here. The key is that it’s ordered, planned travel. One a much deeper level, this Rune speaks of a journey that leads from yourself to your true self.
