light at the end of the tunnel

Sometimes we can feel as if there’s no light in our world. It’s as if we’re beset on all sides by trouble and pain, both emotional and physical. So it is with this reader, who asked: Currently my life is in disarray, financial and medical issues galore. Is there a light at the end of my dark tunnel or is this what I’m stuck with for the future?

Reader, I hear you. Your plight sounds absolutely agonizing. Sadly, there are never any easy answers to questions like yours. What we can do, however, is to cast a dual focused Tarot Spread geared towards giving you a solid idea of what you’re facing, while simultaneously showing you positive ways of coping with what seems like an impossible situation.

This is a three card spread, with a fourth card drawn for advice.

Take a deep breath. Relax. Let’s see what the cards have to say.

Card 1, The Past: 2 of Cups

Love. Connection. Partnerships of all kinds. Loving relationships. Being in accord with someone or something, a partner, a life path, or career. Deep and abiding love.

In the past reader, you may have blossomed while engaged in positive relationships–and your ability to love unconditionally seemed limitless. You may have spent a lot of time and effort for the benefit of others in your life, giving freely and unreservedly.

Advice: This card reminds you that, once again, you should focus on positive relationships in your life. Remember that as you were there for others, those people would like to be there for you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Card 2, The Present: The Devil

Trapped! Stuck, stifled. Oppressed by the demands of material life or finances. Enslaved by physical or material concerns. Entangled in negative or abusive relationships or workplace environments. Seeing only the negative.

The Devil is a card that tends to give folks the heebie-jeebies, yet it’s message is weirdly encouraging. It’s sort of the Trickster of the Tarot, a lot like the contrary Native American Coyote, the Norse Loki, or the West African Anansi (who became Aunt Nancy in the United States.) The Trickster as an archetype teaches us through throwing all sorts of obstacles in our way, and then challenges us to grow by overcoming those obstacles. So, here’s what El Diablo is saying here. Though you may feel chained by obligations, material concerns and physical limitations, you don’t have to remain in this state!

Advice: It may be time to walk away from the things that are making you miserable. What I mean by this: simplify your life so it’s less expensive, financially, physically, and emotionally. Work to reduce your stress level, and put your health and peace of mind first. Find a way to create a more serene existence.

Ace of Wands

Card 3, Future, The Ace of Wands, reversed

Stunted growth. New paths abandoned. Unfinished projects. New projects stagnate. Turning away from new growth. Delays.

First of all, reader, in this, as in all readings, this position in the spread represents where you’ll likely end up if you don’t make any changes in your life. In other words, if you live your life according to old patterns rather than making new choices and taking new actions to break out of the status quo, the song will remain the same.

So, if you continue along the path the same way you always have, you can expect a lot of the same stuff happening in your life In other words, stalled!

Advice: Decide on those new directions and follow through! Don’t stop until you reach the finish line.

Card 4, Advice for the whole reading: 9 of Cups reversed

Settling for what is second best. Not getting your wish. Letdown. Unfulfilled. Complacency.

The advice here is that you’ve got to get over the habit of settling for a not-quite-what-you-wanted existence. If you don’t go for the things you actually do want, you’ll never, ever get them. How unsatisfying!

Wrapping it up:

Reader, your situation is difficult, but the obstacles you face aren’t insurmountable. By choosing what’s most important to you and making it the focus of the changes you want to make in your life, you’ll find yourself stepping out of the Darkness and into the Light.
