I’ve been reading Tarot for more than thirty years and reading professionally at Seattle’s Edge of the Circle Books for more than 15 years. My belief is that Tarot is best used for putting you in touch with your own subconscious, allowing you to make healthy decisions that can change your life for the better. My readings tend to be commonsensical, geared toward helping the client deal with issues and obstacles to wholeness in a way that brings a sense of self-empowerment.

In this weekly column, I’ll take your questions and perform a Tarot Reading just for you. You can submit your question using the link below. You can even submit questions anonymously!

This week’s question comes from Carrefour23 who asks: “I am currently unemployed. How is my luck going to be in finding a good, fun life-affirming job?”

I have done a new spread this week because your query deals with more than one area of your life. This spread is called Planetary Spread. It’s called the Planetary Spread because each planet (or celestial body) has certain correspondences that pertain to different areas of your life, like work, love, obstacles, and actions you may take to reach your aspirations. This spread may be useful for helping you to figure out what direction you’re headed in, and gives advice for how to achieve your goals for the future.

Let’s see what the Cards have to say.

For newcomers, once I’ve shuffled, cut and laid out the cards, I like to take a look at the card on the bottom of the deck. It gives me a “feeling” or a “tone” for the reading. In this case, you’ve got The Page of Cups. It might be time for you to pay attention to the guidance you’re receiving from within. Maybe it’s time to take another look at long-held dreams.

On to the reading proper:

I drew nine cards for this spread.

Card 1, Sun:

Recent life choices, and the thoughts or feelings you might be conscious of regarding those choices. The Sun traditionally governs creativity, healing, wealth, growth, clarity and freedom. So, this position might also have a bearing on those areas of your life, particularly if you are a creative person. The card in this position is Judgment.

Well, Carrefour23, you may be thinking “It’s now or never!” when it comes to knowing that there’s very definitely a direction you feel “called” to pursue. Either you move in the creative direction you’ve yearned for, or forever hold your peace. In your case, the resurrection of a creative desire, or the wish to wake up an endeavor that you thought long-buried, may be what you’re preoccupied with!

Card 2, Moon:

The Subconscious, Dreams, Psychic and/or Intuitive work; hidden feelings about the issue, what’s going on with you emotionally. The card in this position is The Hanged Man.

You may feel life a part of your life is suspension, or that you’re in Limbo. You may feel that in some ways, you’re being tested. In a way, that’s probably true. They key here is to have faith in yourself. There may be sacrifices that you’re a bit iffy about having to make in order to get what you want. On the other hand, you might be seeing that finally going after what you want is a bit of a “sacrifice by yourself to yourself”. In other words, you might be ready to get out of your comfort zone in order to attain the knowledge needed to achieve those goals. Be wary, however, of succumbing to the idea that you must suffer in order to be authentic.

Card 3, Mercury:

Communications of all sorts, including visual communications. What you’re reading, hearing, viewing, etc. The card in this position is The Emperor, reversed.

The first thing I thought when I saw the position of the Emperor reversed was that you really, truly, absolutely do not want to do a corporate, soul-sucking job that will Eat Your Life. You may be picking up news about such companies, and maybe become quite adamant about not going in that direction. Something you’ve recently heard, read, or seen may make you very determined not to work for The Man. Example, small publisher versus major publisher.

Card 4, Venus:

Love, beauty, social skills, the arts. The card in this position is the 5 of Wands, reversed.

Carrefour23, what may be the most important thing to remember this upcoming year is this: do not get sucked into other people’s drama. Just don’t do it. Other folks who cause conflict or engage in crazy-making behaviors are very effective for derailing you from those tasks you set for yourself that are designed to bring you the fulfillment in work and love that you desire. For now, leave the drama behind and stay focused!

Card 5, Mars:

What actions you are taking, what energy you put out into the world, or the lack thereof. The card in this position is The Magician.

First and foremost, The Magician indicates that you wish to move in your own individual direction, and not be one of the herd! You have your own ways of expressing yourself, creatively and otherwise, and prefer to do that, rather than walking the mediocre path followed by many. You have something to say, and that’s what direction you’re headed; communication and creativity about the things sacred to you. You may also be manifesting your will in a positive, dynamic way that brings the new life you’re craving to you in the most effective way possible.

Card 6, Jupiter:

Where you’re expanding in your life; your hopes and dreams, wealth, business. The card in this position is the 9 of Swords, reversed.

The message of the Nine of Swords reversed is this: don’t let your Inner Critic get you down. In fact, the presence of this card in Jupiter tells me that if you expand in the direction you’ve been planning, you’ll have less worry and stress in your life, not more! You may feel sometimes that dealing with money and business is like being plunked down in the middle of a battlefield, but if you keep building on what you’ve been working towards, you’ll find peace and prosperity.

Card 7, Saturn:

Many times, I describe this position as the “Clue-by-Four” that will whack you upside the head until you get this lesson. It deals with limitations, responsibilities, and sometimes endings. The card in this position is The Fool.

The message of The Fool is simple. Your biggest challenge right now is to take a giant leap of faith and believe in yourself! Commit to your new life as if it was a grand adventure. One journey has ended, it’s time to move towards a new destination.

Card 8, The Next Step: Ace of Pentacles

The Ace of Pentacles often heralds new beginnings in the Earth element: new job, business, home, acquisitions. The message here is that wealth and joy in the same package are not impossible.

How many times have we seen people do work they can’t stand because the money is good? Or assume that if they do something they love, they’ll always be destitute? One can have an apartment that they love and get to enjoy, one can have love and sex in the same person. The challenge here is to integrate Earth and Spirit.

Invest in yourself!

Card 9, Attitude Adjustment: Queen of Wands

Take back your own power! I like to think of the Queen of Wands as one’s Inner Diva. She’s the Lady who knows what she wants and goes after it. This warm, vivacious personality is often seen in performers or artists or eccentric store owners – anything where she gets to be center stage. It might be time for you to align yourself with this part of your psyche, and emulate her in your own life.

Wrapping it up:

Carrefour23, I think that this New Year will bring many important opportunities for you to combine creativity, originality, independence and less worry for you when it comes to financial matters. Don’t get sidetracked by those who do not appreciate you, or try to distract you from your life purpose. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for some serious growth!
