I’ve been reading Tarot for more than thirty years and reading professionally at Seattle’s Edge of the Circle Books for more than 15 years. My belief is that Tarot is best used for putting you in touch with your own subconscious, allowing you to make healthy decisions that can change your life for the better. My readings tend to be commonsensical, geared toward helping the client deal with issues and obstacles to wholeness in a way that brings a sense of self-empowerment.

In this weekly column, I’ll take you questions and perform a Tarot Reading just for you. You can submit your question using the link below. You can even submit questions anonymously!

This week’s question comes from an anonymous reader, who asks: “What does 2016 look like for me?”

Hey Anon! Well, it’s a New Year, and what’s more, it’s a Fire Monkey year, which can bring lots of excitement, lots of dynamic changes and a period where everything seems to be in flux! This will be a make or break year for many people.

Lots of folks had a less than stellar 2015, and are hoping for a better 2016. Let’s see what the Cards have to say about your personal New Year.

I did a slightly different spread this week, because your question is a rather general. This spread is called The Star. It’s quite useful for figuring out what really matters in any given situation, and thus is wonderful for gaining clarity. It’s also a terrific spread for advice, and for brainstorming new ideas and strategies for the future.

Then I followed it up with an Elemental reading, choosing four cards for each Element, Earth, Air, Fire and Water. More on that, later.

Once I’ve shuffled, cut and laid out the cards, I like to take a look at the card on the bottom of the deck. It gives me a feeling or a tone for the reading. In this case, you’ve got The Fool, reversed.

What this tells me is that, like many people these days, you’re really hoping for a new path or new beginning, but also fear to place too much hope in the future. You may be feeling let down by having those hopes dashed one too many times. The challenge here is to believe in your own ability to create positive change in your own life.

On to the reading proper.

Part One: The Star

Card 1: Where You Are Now; Three of Swords

Sorrow, separations, two people have problems because of a third person, situation, habits, distance, etc. Heartbreak. Sadness stemming from dissatisfaction with Creativity or Career.

Ouch! You may be struggling to recover from a painful period in your life, Anon. There’s a need to remember that you’ll heal from it, but at your own pace. Healing takes time. A good strategy is to be gentle with yourself.

Card 2: Advice for the Situation; 2 of Wands reversed

Plans fall through. Back to the drawing board!

In order for new plans to work, the best strategy is to plan, plan, and plan some more! Make sure that you have a firm foundation to build on for the success of future endeavors. Otherwise, things may not go the way you want them to.

Card 3: The Challenge You Must Face; 10 of Pentacles, reversed

Money worries. Instability, with regard to finances. In relationships, this person is not the one to consider building a life with, the time is not right to settle down, wait and let things develop instead.

Many times when the 10 of Pentacles comes up reversed, it’s warning you to get all material matters in order. This may also include cutting people off who are draining you dry, without giving anything back. It’s time to conserve all your resources, emotional, physical and material. Building real stability is a challenge you must meet to take advantage of the many opportunities coming your way this year. When it comes to romance, relax and experience the relationship, rather than planning the next move.

Card 4: Positive Uses of Your Energy at This Time; The Magician, reversed

Need to be more grounded, more realistic in what is actually possible. A longing to use skills and talents in the most positive, effective ways possible. Look out for your own best interests, while being scrupulously honest and ethical. Don’t get over-confident! Think for yourself, be an individual.

Anon, the Magician reversed may suggest that this is a time to start doing the work you’ve always wanted to, or work on creative projects you envision. Allow yourself to stretch and reach your own unique potential!

Card 5: More Positive Actions; Temperance

Finding the perfect fit. Balance. Perfect combination of energies, or factors, or resources to create the best possible situation out of what may have been tough times, or even just a sub-optimum reality. You may be gathering all the different components you need to create a fabulous, fulfilling year, Anon! The good news is that all that you need is readily available. All you have to do is put them to use.

Card 6: The Crucial Insight; The Queen of Cups, reversed

Overwhelmed. Ruled excessively by intuition or alternatively, shutting down.

The beautiful, empathetic Queen of Cups in her reversed aspect may be telling you to learn to say no! You may give and give and give to others until you have no reserves of emotional energy left, and then feel like you need to shut everyone out just to regain your equilibrium. Set healthy boundaries, instead! Then you’ll have the energy to accomplish your goals this year!

Part Two: The Elements

The realm of the physical and material. House or home, work, money, the physical body. The card is the 3 of Wands, reversed. In terms of work, money and related matters, Anon, this is a year to take initiative. Don’t wait for others to make things happen! Otherwise, your efforts to move into new territory may be stymied!

The realm of the mind. Communications of all kinds, and anything to do with our ability to communicate. King of Cups, reversed. You’ll need to be as grounded as possible to act effectively this year, particularly if communication is one of the major factors of your work. Neither a workaholic nor a playaholic be! Balance is key here.

The realm of Action. Will. Power. Ace of Pentacles, reversed. You may struggle with the phenomenon of wealth without joy, or joy without wealth–when you can actually have both. Don’t settle–it may take longer, but don’t give up.

The realm of the subconscious, dreams, and psychic or intuitive abilities. 7 of Wands, reversed. Emotionally, you may just be tired of having to struggle. You may just want some peace. There’s a need to stand up for yourself. Persevere, you’re almost there.

Wrapping It Up

You may be feeling a bit worn from last year’s sorrows, Anon, but a better time is coming. This New Year will bring change and creative opportunities, and you have all that you need to make the most of them and enjoy life to the fullest. It’s up to you. Reinvent yourself!
